TARGET: AKIO TOYODA, PRESIDENT, TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION

Update: On March 28th, we delivered your petition to Toyota’s new CEO, Koji Sato, at the company’s Tokyo HQ, calling on him to deliver on plans to ‘get serious about electric vehicles.’

His elevation to the top job followed a storm of criticism targeting Toyota’s attempts to put the brakes on climate policy as the company held on to fossil-fuel powered cars of the past.

Previous CEO Akio Toyoda threw in the towel in January 2023, stating ‘I now need to take a step back in order to let young people enter the new chapter of what the future of mobility should be like.”

We’ll be keeping a close eye on developments.

A research report published in August 2021 by the Sierra Club, exposed the world’s biggest car manufacturer, Toyota, for lobbying governments to slam the brakes on climate action.

The report found that Toyota’s well-funded and powerful lobbyists are:

  • Working to prevent a phase-out of polluting internal combustion engines around the world.
  • Lobbying Senators to weaken greenhouse gas standards in the US.
  • Blocking clean energy investments in Japan.

Toyota claims to be a sustainable company striving to make a “better planet” — but its actions speak otherwise.

Sign the petition telling Toyota’s President, Akio Toyoda, to #StartYourPossible and stop Toyota’s lobbying against climate action and commit to 100% Electric vehicle sales by 2030.

Despite its size and power, Toyota has fallen behind Chinese and German rivals in the global electric vehicles race. It came last in Greenpeace East Asia’s recent ranking of the top 10 car companies measured on their decarbonization plans.

In spite of the fact that the world’s biggest manufacturers, such as Volkswagen, Honda, Ford, General Motors, and Volvo, have already pledged to go 100% electric by as early as 2030, Toyota continues to lobby for regulations that protect internal combustion-powered gas-electric hybrids such as the Prius, and for and costly and inefficient hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Road transport is responsible for 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions. As the rest of the auto industry embraces the electric revolution, let’s show Toyota that the world can see what it’s doing, and we won’t let them get away with it.

Act now! Sign the petition to show Toyota the world is watching.
