TARGET: CALVIN MCDONALD, CEO OF LULULEMON ATHLETICA
High-end activewear brand, Lululemon, is a major climate culprit. Lululemon claims to be a sustainable brand but it is addicted to dirty fossil fuels.
From its fossil fuel-based fabrics to its coal-burning factories and gas-guzzling ships, it’s clear Lululemon is failing to deliver on its climate commitments.
Tell Lululemon CEO Calvin McDonald that Lululemon needs to shape up today.
To: Calvin McDonald, CEO of Lululemon Athletica
From: [Your Name]Dear Calvin McDonald,
In 2018, more than 8 million people died from fossil fuel pollution, according to research from Harvard University. The World Health Organization says climate change will cause an additional 250,000 deaths per year between 2030 and 2050 from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhoea and heat stress.
The worst part? Children are among the most vulnerable to these health risks.
Your company thrives off wellness culture and connection to community.
Yet, Lululemon has failed to commit to reducing dirty fossil fuel use. That’s mainly thanks to your intensity-based target for your supply chain for 2030. Intensity-based targets mean that your emissions will continue to increase as your sales grow. How is this a reduction?
Lululemon has also failed to make any meaningful progress towards phasing out synthetic fabrics made from fossil fuels.
It is horrifying that a brand like Lululemon, that claims to be ‘made by yogis’ and boasts ambassadors who are leaders in the health and sporting fields, is choosing to remain addicted to the fossil fuels that drive catastrophic global warming and cause these deaths.
There are clear alternatives, with commitments from your competitors to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions.
I am asking you to deliver on your marketing promises on sustainability and health by ending Lululemon’s fossil fuel addiction.
That means switching to 100% solar and wind power across your supply chain by 2030. That means ending coal-powered manufacturing and LNG-based shipping. That means completely phasing out synthetic, fossil fuel-based fabrics.
Make Lululemon what it claims to be. Reclaim your leadership in wellness.
Healthfully yours,
