Clare Schuster
Board member Clare Schuster is a lawyer specializing in climate change law at Equity Generation Lawyers. Clare represents investors, non-profits, young people and other clients in strategic litigation spanning Australia’s consumer, environmental, financial services and corporations laws. In 2021, Clare was also a fellow at the Australia Institute, a progressive think tank based in Canberra, where she conducted research into climate-related financial risks, and political transparency and accountability issues. For two years, Clare has volunteered at the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University, coordinating a global network of legal practitioners and academics working on climate change and reporting on Australian cases. Clare is currently based in Sydney, Australia.
Joseph Zacune
Joseph Zacune is a Board Member at Action Speaks Louder. Joseph has over 20 years of experience in campaigning and communications, over a decade of which he has spent working for NGOs on human rights, fossil fuel divestment, clean energy and corporate accountability campaigning. Most recently, he worked as the global energy communications manager for the European Climate Foundation. He speaks Swedish and Spanish, and is studying Japanese. Joseph has a BA and MA in Political Science and Economic History from Lund University in Sweden.
Trista Rose
Trista Rose is the Head of Research at Actions Speaks Louder. Formerly, Trista worked for leading investment banks in London, New York and Sydney in both research and proprietary trading roles. Trista has an honours degree from the University of Queensland and a masters from the University of Oxford.
Hyekyeong Kim
Board member Hyekyeong Kim is a media specialist with 18 years of experience in journalism and global communications, specializing in human rights and the climate crisis. Her career began as a journalist at the Korean daily Hankookilbo, and she later became the Korean correspondent for Reporters Without Borders. While reporting on the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, she saw firsthand the need to transition away from fossil fuels into safe, clean energy. She advises on Asia regional strategy at the GSCC network.
Moegi Nakamura
Moegi Nakamura is a Junior Associate at Action Speaks Louder working on Japanese corporate campaigns. While in college, she became aware of the urgency of climate change while traveling the world and entered the field as a volunteer with 350 Japan. She has a background in community organizing and is passionate about empowering citizens to tackle climate change. She holds a BA in International Relations from Meijigakuin University in Tokyo, Japan.
Laura Kelly
Laura Kelly is the Corporate Strategy Director at Action Speaks Louder. She has 20 years of experience campaigning with trade unions and environmental organizations. Prior to that, Laura was Strategy Director at Environment Tasmania and Director at the Climate Action Network Australia.
Michelle Houtman
Board member Michelle Houtman brings a deep understanding of corporate culture, having led transformation processes in some of Australia’s largest companies, including Westpac and BT Financial Group. She has lived and breathed the challenge of integrating customer needs with those of delivery for many years, from launching the ABC’s first corporate website to holding the role of CTO of UK startup TotalJobs.com.
Bernadette Maheandiran
Board member Bernadette Maheandiran is a lawyer with a specialty in international corporate responsibility and accountability. She was called to the Ontario Bar in 2010 after serving as a judicial law clerk in the Central East Region of the Superior Court of Justice. As Research and Legal Analyst for Market Forces, she has spearheaded corporate climate action across Asia. Bernadette is currently based in Melbourne, Australia.
Tom Brookes
Board member Tom Brookes started his career as a journalist, covering technology, regulation and broader European politics before moving into communications, public affairs and media relations. He worked as press spokesman and political advisor for Microsoft’s General Counsel before joining Apple as Director of Government Affairs, Europe, Middle East and Africa. In 2009, Tom moved to the European Climate Foundation as Executive Director, Strategic Communications.
James Lorenz
James Lorenz is the Executive Director at Action Speaks Louder. He has 25 years of experience in global communication and campaigning. With a BA in History and Politics from the University of Newcastle, James started his career at Médecins Sans Frontières covering global emergency communications and East and Central African emergencies. He was Head of Communications and Digital at Greenpeace Australia Pacific from 2009 until 2014. Before setting up Action Speaks Louder, James was a GSCC network director, setting up nationally-led teams across Asia Pacific.
Bea Warleta
Bea Warleta is a Digital Campaigner at Action Speaks Louder. Bea has five years of experience communicating about social and environmental impact. After graduating from the University of Leeds with a BA in Communication and Media, Bea has worked across the fashion industry — from small sustainable startups to big conglomerates like LVMH — changing consumer mindsets and helping shape sustainability narratives. A Spanish, English, and Mandarin speaker, she has lived and worked across Latin America, Southeast and East Asia, and Europe.
Ami Torii
Ami’s career spans from managing product marketing for Square and Amazon Japan to Fundraising & Engagement at Greenpeace. She is based in Japan, working to drive Action Speaks Louder’s corporate campaigns and build a deeper public understanding of the urgency of the climate crisis in East Asia.
Karmela Tordecilla
Karmela Tordecilla is a Content Creator at Action Speaks Louder. A creative storyteller at heart, Karmela has written and produced multimedia content for CNN Philippines, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and a few other nonprofits since earning her journalism degree from the University of the Philippines.
Jieon Lee
Jieon Lee is the Green Steel Campaign Manager at Action Speaks Louder. With a BA in Materials Science & Engineering from Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, Jieon has spent most of his career as a campaigner in the climate justice and energy transition advocacy. For over 10 years, he led national campaigns on fossil industries and renewable energy with the Korean Federation for Environmental Movements (KFEM). Jieon was the Executive Director of Climate Emergency Action Network Korea.
Lyn Snailham
Lyn Snailham is the Operations Manager at Action Speaks Louder. She has spent most of her career as a program director in the finance sector, implementing a variety of initiatives in the technology, organisational change, property and risk management areas. In transitioning to work supporting the climate movement, she has held operations management roles at various non-profits.
Ruth MacGilp
Ruth MacGilp is the Fashion Campaign Manager at Action Speaks Louder. Ruth has 10 years of experience at the intersection of fashion and sustainability. She was previously the Communications Manager at Fashion Revolution, and Marketing Coordinator at Fashion Revolution Scotland. She has also worked as a freelance copywriter, digital marketer and communications consultant for sustainable fashion brands, publications and non-profits. Ruth regularly writes for online and print publications and has created an award winning blog, newsletter and podcast about ethical fashion. She has a BA in Fashion and Marketing from Heriot Watt University, and has also studied short courses in fashion communications at Central Saint Martins and Parsons School of Design, as well as degrowth at the Centre for Human Ecology.
Yiseo Kim
Yiseo Kim is a Campaign Manager at Action Speaks Louder, managing the Kpop4Planet project. She started her career designing gardens and parks, with a BRA in Landscape and an MA in Urban Policy from the University of Seoul. She entered the climate field when she joined Greenpeace in 2013 as an Oceans Campaigner. Since 2015, she has also worked on a youth urban farming organisation and led an urban farming project in Seoul.
Sarah Kirk
Sarah Kirk is the Programmes Director at Action Speaks Louder. She has over 15 years of experience building organisations, structures and coalitions that hold decision makers, governments and organisations accountable. Sarah has a Masters in Public Health and a BA in Anthropology from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Before joining Action Speaks Louder, she was the Head of the Secretariat of the Global TB Caucus, where she helped launch and grow the network across seven regional caucuses, and successfully advocated for billions of dollars in increases in development and health budgets. Prior to that, Sarah worked in public health and advocacy in the NGO and Government sectors for various organisations, focusing on infectious diseases, child health, and sexual and reproductive health and rights across the Asia Pacific and Southern and Eastern African regions.

While traveling alone in Hokkaido, I noticed a strong smell of decay on the shore of Lake Abashiri. The source of the smell was diatoms that had grown so abnormally that they filled the sand of the lakeside and the rotting corpses of salmon.

山形県と宮城県境にある蔵王山では、冬の珍しい現象「樹氷」が見られる。 「樹氷」はその変わった形から「スノーモンスター」と呼ばれ、季節風がもたらす湿った強い風と大量の雪により、日本固有のモミの一種アオモリトドマツに雪と氷が繰り返し吹き付けられることで出来上がる。
現在、カミキリムシやガの発生により、多数のアオモリトドマツが死滅している。被害の大きい9合目付近の標高数百メートルの広範囲では、木がほぼ全滅した。同時に、地球温暖化による気温上昇は顕著で、この樹氷は年々標高の高い場所でしか形成されなくなっており、このまま気温上昇が続けば50年後には樹氷は形成されなくなってしまう。私は7年間に渡り撮影とフィールドワークによる研究を続けてきた。 木々の雪が溶けた5月末の晴れた夜、枯れた樹氷と星空を切ない気持ちで見上げ、見つめ続け、手を合わせ祈った。 地球温暖化と気候変動は、これらの木が枯れた理由の 1 つと考えられている。 また、観光開発や観光誘致の影響が考えられ、 枯れ木が広がる2つの場所の共通点は、観光で人が集まる場所だということだ。 光、熱、車からの二酸化炭素などは、低地よりも高山の方がはるかに敏感である。 現在、これらの樹木を再生するプロジェクトが開始されている。 地球温暖化はさまざまな問題を引き起こすが、数百年後の未来にこれらの木が再生することを願っている。

Zao on the border of Yamagata and Miyagi prefectures, you can see a rare winter phenomenon called “juhyo,” or tree ice. Juhyo are called “snow monsters” because of their unusual shape. It is created when strong, moist winds and large amounts of snow brought by the winter monsoon repeatedly blow snow and ice onto the aomori-todomatsu (Abies sachalinensis), a type of fir native to Japan. Currently, an infestation of midges and moths has resulted in the death of numerous Aomori ash trees. In a wide area several hundred meters above sea level near the ninth station, where the damage is most severe, nearly all the trees have died. At the same time, global warming has caused a marked rise in temperature, and this ice can only form at higher elevations year after year. I have continued my research by photography and fieldwork over the past seven years. On a clear night at the end of May, when the snow had melted from the trees, I looked up wistfully at the withered ice and the starry sky, and continued to gaze at these trees, clasping my hands and praying. Global warming and climate change are believed to be one of the reasons for the death of these trees. Other possible reasons include the impact of tourism development and attraction of tourism. The two places where the dead trees spread have one thing in common: they are places where people come for tourism. Light, heat, and carbon dioxide from cars are much more sensitive in high mountains than in lowlands. Projects are currently being initiated to regenerate these trees. Global warming causes many problems, but hopefully these trees will regrow in the future, hundreds of years from now.

On the first day of 2023, the Presqu’ile Provincial Park and its coastal trails were flooded with water. Typically on January 1, the ground and nearby lake would be covered in ice and snow in Ontario. However, record-high temperatures have been broken across the province this year, leaving many trails, river ice rinks and ski hills closed.

This photo shows the local people in central Myanmar were combating climate change by forest restoration and rehabilitation (i.e., planting trees in a barren land near their village). Before planting, rectangular pits (trenches) were dug for capturing and storing sufficient rainwater. Cow dung & biofertilizers were put inside the pits. The purpose of tree planting is to restore the watershed area and to create a fuelwood supply plantation. For survival and subsistence, planting trees is one of the local strategies to cope with harsh climatic and edaphic conditions.
This photo reflects that the local people’s participation is crucial for every ecosystem restoration. Moreover, this photo is believed to show a powerful image that encourages us to take better care of our planet.

これが「気候変動 」の始まりだ。コロンビア最大、そして世界最大級の露天掘り鉱山は、最悪の汚染物質であり温室効果ガスの一つである石炭の採掘が、自然や環境に与える深い影響を示している。企業は責任ある採掘を行っていると主張していますが、実際には、周辺地域のすべての生態系が荒廃し、この地域でも気温が上昇し、昨年は最高気温に達している。世界最大のエネルギー供給源である石炭は、最大の汚染物質のひとつでもあるのだ。
いまだに、数えきれないエネルギー企業が石炭を燃料とする施設を建設中である。石炭は産業革命以降の発展の基礎となったが、同時に地球レベルでの気温の上昇をもたらした。逆説的だが、地球温暖化と気候変動を止めるために、世界は石炭の使用を緊急に止める必要がある。

Here begins the Climate Change. The biggest open pit mine in Colombia and one of the biggest in the world, shows the deep impact that the extraction of one of the worst polluter and greenhouse gases causes in nature and environment: The coal.
The companies claim to be responsible mining; but the fact is that all the ecosystems in the surrounding area are devastated and the temperature is getting higher in this area also, reaching top measures on last years. The coal, the biggest energy supplier in the world, is also one of the greatest polluters. Thousands of energy companies are right now in construction, which will be powered by coal. Coal was fundamental in the development of the industrial era; but also took us to this increase of the temperature on a global level. Paradoxically, the world needs in urgency to stop the use of coal, to stop the global warming and climate change.

In the summer of 2022, rising sea temperatures caused the coral reefs around Ishigaki Island to almost completely die after large-scale bleaching. This is the appearance of the bleached coral with dazzling pastel colours that will be attractive for a little while before it decays.

The day before I took this photo, there had been severe fires all up and down the coast of California, Oregon and Washington. My sister’s house had burned down, and my father’s house had been threatened. My father told me that they had woke up at 2am to fight the fire from spreading onto their land, and my sister had drove home the next day to find her house burned down in a separate fire. The day after I heard that, the sky in San Francisco where I live turned orange from all the smoke. I went out with my camera to try to document what felt like a biblical event. This shot won Unsplash’s photo of the year in 2020.

全く違うものを撮ろうと思ってヨセミテに来たが、公園に着いたらそこは煙に覆われていた。煙の中でキャンプをするのを避けるため、家に戻ることも考えたが、結局、この辺にとどまった。夜になって煙が少し晴れたとき、谷間で火が燃えているのが見えた。その景色は現実離れした感じがあった。しかし、濃い煙が登山者の意欲を削ぐことはないようだ。よく見ると、エル・キャピタンを登るクライマーたちのヘッドランプの明かりが見える。

I came to Yosemite to photograph something completely different and when I arrived to the park it was covered in smoke. I considered going back home to avoid camping in smoke, but eventually I stayed around. When at night the smoke cleared for a bit it was surreal to see the fire burning in the valley. The thick smoke didn’t seem to discourage climbers though – if you look carefully you can see lights from their headlamps as they climb up El Capitan.

Early morning on Dhal Chor. A girl sits on a tree stump facing fishing boats returned to the island after a night at sea. Rapid erosion and rising sea levels are increasingly threatening the existence of islands off the coast of Bangladesh. Dhal Chor, Monpura and Bhola are some of many islands on the bay of Bengal affected by increasingly rapid erosion and some of the fastest recorded sea-level rises in the world. These “vanishing islands” are shrinking dramatically.

20年以上、世界のあちこちで写真を撮ってきました。特にヒマラヤなどの山岳地域では、気候変動の影響を強く実感します。自分がこの世界に生きている以上、地球環境に無関心ではいられません。自然を壊すことはもとより、それを止めなかった者にも責任がある。だから、自分もできることから行動したいと思っています。
ヒシャム・アキラ・バルーチャは、日本生まれのミックスルーツ（日本人とインド系ミャンマー人）のアーティストで、過去25年間ブルックリンを拠点に、ビジュアルアート、写真、音楽、演奏、インスタレーションなどの制作に専念した。南カリフォルニアと東京で育ち、多様な文化の影響を受けてきた背景を活気あふれる作品で表現し、心の複雑さや、自身の文化的背景が現在の人生観にどのように影響してきたかを理解するための探求を積み重ねてきた。 1998年にロードアイランド・スクール・オブ・デザインを卒業し、写真学の学士号を取得。 日本、ニューヨーク、オランダでの個展はもちろん、世界中で数え切れないほどの展覧会に出展してきた。また、ドラムを中心に他の楽器を加えた最大100人のミュージシャンが一度に演奏する大規模な音楽パフォーマンスを企画し、ロックフェラー・センター・プラザ、MoMA、MoCA、シドニー・オペラハウス（豪）、MoMA PS1、バービカン（ロンドン）などで演奏してきた。

Born in 1987. Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. He finished a doctoral course in Philosophy at Humboldt University of Berlin, specializing in economic and social philosophy, and received the prestigious “Deutscher Memorial Prize” for Karl Marx’s Ecosocialism: Capital, Nature, and the Unfinished Critique of Political Economy (translated into Japanese as Before the Flood, Kadokawa Sophia Bunko) as the first Japanese and the youngest person. The book has been translated and published in seven countries.
In Japan, he received the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Award for his pioneering research on the late years of Marx. His recent publications include “Boku wa ubar de sprain, yama de shika de fight, minamata de weep” (KADOKAWA), “Zero kara no ‘shihon ron'” (NHK Shinsho), and his bestseller “Jinshinsei no ‘shihon ron'” (Shueisha Shinsho) which sold over 450,000 copies and won the “Shinsho Taisho 2021” award.

Lillian Ono has been a fashion model since 2004. Since her travel to COP25 Madrid in 2019 without taking a plane, she has been amplifying climate change-related information and encouraging people to take action on social networking platforms. She is a co-host of the podcast Emerald Practices. She has organized numerous projects including the 2020 Peaceful Climate Strike, Spiral Club, Green Tea, and Climate Dictionary.

Tao Okamoto is a Japanese actor who was born in Chiba, Japan. She started her career as a model at the age of 14 locally in Japan and then moved to New York in 2009. She appeared in numerous fashion shows and advertisements and became one of the most significant Asian models of the era.
In 2013, she made her screen debut in “The Wolverine” alongside Hugh Jackman. Since then, she has continued to appear in numerous movies and TV series in both Japan and abroad.
In 2020, she launched a social media account and a podcast called “Emerald Practices” to advocate environmental issues and animal rights.
The record-breaking high temperatures almost every year, the ever-increasing floods, food shortages, and the resulting infringement on all types of life…. It is undoubtedly our human activities that are exacerbating the climate crisis, and we need to take responsibility for this. All human beings on this earth share this problem and must work hand in hand to confront the climate crisis. I hope that Canon, a company that has been loved around the world, will be a leader in this movement and, like the viewfinder of a camera, will play a role in reflecting and communicating the truth.
Yumiko Sakuma is a New York/Tokyo-based writer and activist. After writting extensively about climate crisis related activism, she has taken on a role of activist herself. She works to get more people and corporations to join the fight to combat the climate crisis.

Born in Shibuya, Tokyo in 1977. Completed the doctoral course in Fine Arts at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. With his interests in anthropology and folklore, Ishikawa has traveled all over the world from remote areas to urban cities.
He received the Photographic Society of Japan’s Newcomer’s Award and the Kodansha Publishing Culture Award for his “NEW DIMENSION” (Akaasha) and “POLAR” (Little More), published in 2008. His 2011 “CORONA” (Seidosha) won the Ken Domon Award. In 2020, he received the Writer’s Prize of the Photographic Society of Japan Award for “EVEREST” (CCC Media House) and “Marebito” (Shogakukan).
As a prolific writer, he has published numerous titles including “The Last Adventurer” (Shueisha), which won the Ken Kaiko Nonfiction Award. His latest publications include “Kangchenjunga” (POST-FAKE) and “Manaslu 2022 edition” (SLANT). His works are in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Yokohama Museum of Art, Okinawa Prefectural Museum of Art, and others.
With my experience in taking photographs in many parts of the world for over 20 years, I strongly feel the effects of climate change, especially in mountainous regions such as the Himalayas. As long as I live in this world, I cannot be indifferent to the global environment. Responsibilities not only lay in those who have destroyed nature, but also in those who have not stopped it. That is why I feel the need to take action where I can.
Celina Chien is an artist and storyteller, combining her roles as an ecologist, award-winning photojournalist and actor to share emotive narratives, harness empathy for change, and advocate for biodiversity. Her work is grounded in her background as a scientist and her kinship to nature, using art to extend the reaches of human empathy beyond our own species. Celina is an outspoken advocate of environmental and social justice.
Celina is a TEDx speaker and serves on the board and council of international NGOs Panthera, Reserva Youth Land Trust and Girls Who Click. In 2021, Celina was a finalist in the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition and currently sits on its 2023 judging panel. She has a BSc in Biological Sciences and MRes in Tropical Forest Ecology from Imperial College London.

Hisham Akira Bharoocha is a Japanese-born mixed race (Japanese / Indian Myanmar) artist who has been based in Brooklyn for 25 years, concentrating on creating visual art, photography, music, musical performances, and installations. Raised in southern California as well as Tokyo, Japan, Bharoocha brings his multi-cultural background to life with his highly vibrant work, touching on the intricacies of the mind, building on the search for understanding how his own cultural background has led him to his current perspective in life.
Bharoocha graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 1998 with a BFA in photography. He has had solo exhibitions in Japan, New York, and The Netherlands, not to mention the countless exhibitions of his work have been displayed around the world. Bharoocha is also known for organizing large-scale musical performances with up to 100 musicians performing at once, often focusing around drumming but including other instrumentation. These performances have happened at renowned spaces such as Rockefeller Center Plaza, MoMA, MoCA, The Sydney Opera House (Australia), MoMA PS1, Barbican (London) to name a few.
