Tell Canon Europe and Asia: Clean power = sustainable products

TABLE OF CONTENTS
Canon regional targets Option 4

Canon Inc. remains the only major camera maker that has not publicly committed to powering its global operations with renewable energy. This is precisely what hundreds of our supporters have been asking Canon’s Sustainability Headquarters in Japan to do. However, they continue to resist your calls to action. If they won’t listen, will the regional offices most affected by Canon’s lack of ambition listen?

Recently, Canon’s regional office in Oceania became the first — and only — to announce a goal to reach 100% RE in its regional operations by 2030. Canon’s global operations, however, will continue to rely on fossil fuels, accelerating climate change and polluting the planet. In Europe, Canon is active in its sustainability efforts, yet still lacks a public commitment to reach 100% RE regionally. Meanwhile, most of Canon’s products sold around the world are manufactured in Asia — which is also the region with the highest energy demand for Canon. There is no renewable energy commitment there, either.

Canon needs to commit to operating globally on clean, renewable energy: this is not only a feasible goal, but a necessary action for a global company like Canon to take corporate responsibility. Ultimately, we need global action from Canon’s Headquarters — but each region within Canon also has the power, and responsibility, to step up and contribute to cleaning up global operations through their regional initiatives. Join us in urging the CEOs and sustainability executives in Europe and Asia to follow Canon Oceania’s footsteps and set a regional 100% RE target by 2030.

FAQS

Why is it important for Canon to commit to 100% RE?

Corporate procurement is one of the key factors in ensuring enough renewable energy gets built in time to slow down climate change, especially in the regions where it's most needed. A company of Canon’s size and influence has the potential, and responsibility, to stop contributing to the acceleration of global warming and to lead the fight against climate change through their energy use.

What are Canon’s competitors’ RE targets?

Canon’s competitors in Japan have all made ambitious commitments. Sony and Nikon have both committed to 100% RE globally by 2030, while Ricoh and Fujifilm have committed to 100% RE by 2040. In the printer industry, Epson reached 100% global RE use in 2023. Canon, however, lags far behind its competitors, as it still resists a global RE target.

In 2023, Canon’s renewable energy use increased. Why is this not enough?

Prior to 2023, Canon’s RE use never went above the 4% range. Following our campaign efforts, Canon’s renewable energy use increased to 12.87% in 2023. While this is a significant increase, it is still a very small percentage of the company’s energy use. More crucially, this increase did not come coupled with a public commitment to continue increasing their renewable energy to reach at least 60% RE by 2030 and 100% long-term. Without a public target, there is no way to keep Canon accountable and ensure that meaningful progress is made across all regions.
