Canon Inc. remains the only major camera maker that has not publicly committed to powering its global operations with renewable energy. This is precisely what hundreds of our supporters have been asking Canon’s Sustainability Headquarters in Japan to do. However, they continue to resist your calls to action. If they won’t listen, will the regional offices most affected by Canon’s lack of ambition listen?
Recently, Canon’s regional office in Oceania became the first — and only — to announce a goal to reach 100% RE in its regional operations by 2030. Canon’s global operations, however, will continue to rely on fossil fuels, accelerating climate change and polluting the planet. In Europe, Canon is active in its sustainability efforts, yet still lacks a public commitment to reach 100% RE regionally. Meanwhile, most of Canon’s products sold around the world are manufactured in Asia — which is also the region with the highest energy demand for Canon. There is no renewable energy commitment there, either.
Canon needs to commit to operating globally on clean, renewable energy: this is not only a feasible goal, but a necessary action for a global company like Canon to take corporate responsibility. Ultimately, we need global action from Canon’s Headquarters — but each region within Canon also has the power, and responsibility, to step up and contribute to cleaning up global operations through their regional initiatives. Join us in urging the CEOs and sustainability executives in Europe and Asia to follow Canon Oceania’s footsteps and set a regional 100% RE target by 2030.
